Help 100 Black Families Give Birth Safely

#100blackbirths

We are helping 100 Black families deliver their babies safely outside of the hospital.

We need your help.

Why are we raising money for Black Families?

Homebirth.com is creating a fund to help Black families gain access to midwifery care during this critical time.

The US has one of the worst maternal mortality rates among developed countries. According to the CDC, the number of reported pregnancy-related deaths in the United States steadily has more than doubled since 1987 to 2016.

If we look closer, black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die than non-Hispanic white women regardless of education and socioeconomic status. In 2014, there were an average of 40 deaths per 100,000 births for black women compared to 12 per 100,000 for white women from pregnancy and child-related causes.

Research reveals that education and income offer make little difference when it comes to birthing outcomes for Black families. A black woman with an advanced degree is more likely to lose her baby than a white woman with less than an eighth-grade education.

The rate of maternal mortality and social disparities point to complex intersections of social determinants and structural inequities that undermine Black maternal health

We will sponsor midwifery care for 100 Black families. Black mothers and their babies deserve the opportunity to birth safely with quality care. Finances should not be a barrier.

The WHO states that “83% of all maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn deaths could be averted with the full package of midwifery care.” Yet, the U.S. healthcare system does not integrate midwifery practice in its prenatal and postpartum care.

It’s important that we come together to help provide Black families with midwifery care.

Why now?

Given the inequities that Black families face when birthing, we must act now! Black families are also facing a disproportionate level of impact from COVID-19.

The African-American community has relied on quality home birth care for decades, while research shows it is often a safer option for mothers and babies. We want to help ensure Black families gain access to the care they deserve.

Our goal is to help raise enough funds for 100 families to give birth safely, respectfully, and in their communities.

Every child and mother deserve the best possible start to life.

How will donations be used?

  • 80 percent of the total donations raised will go towards funding the costs of 100 home births—this includes complete midwifery care (prenatal and postpartum care) as well as supplies.

  • 20 percent of the total donations raised will be used to provide support and guidance for families and to continue developing our website that helps families connect with local birth professionals. Ultimately, providing more families with access to home birth and midwifery care.
